The ink sticks are gently ground against the inkstone and water is added to make a rich Chinese calligraphy ink exactly the consistency you want.
The ink stick is made out of traditional oil soot, which when combined with water makes a rich and smooth ink, which will be excellent for Chinese calligraphy. You can use more or less water to vary the consistency of the ink.
