Psalm 119:57-64

The Lord My Portion

Summary- Because I realize what an amazing part I have in the Lord’s riches, I should strive to keep His word. His favor is the most important thing to me. When I see how my actions do not line up with His word, I should correct them. Nothing is more important to do than keep His commandments, and I should obey quickly. Even though my enemy tries to trap me, I will not turn to my own methods and forget God’s. In the darkest part of the night, my heart will still give thanks to You. I am unified with those who love and obey You. Everything around me can be used to learn about God and His statutes.

Central Teaching- There should be nothing more important than God in my life, and I should strive to follow Him in all things.

Key Words- portion, promised, turned, sought, considered, keep

Key Verse- 57

Ten things this passage says-

  1. The Lord is my portion.
  2. His favor should be sought with my whole heart.
  3. He is gracious, and His word is gracious.
  4. If my ways do not line up with His word, I should change until they do.
  5. Obedience should be swift and without delay.
  6. Trials and attacks should not make me forget His word.
  7. He is worthy of praise even in the darkest part of the night.
  8. My friends should fear the Lord and keep His precepts.
  9. The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.
  10. He is my teacher.

Ten things this passage does NOT say-

  1. I need things outside of the Lord.
  2. All that He has given me should not earn my obedience to Him.
  3. God is satisfied with my half-hearted seeking of Him.
  4. His word is ungracious, or his character is ever anything but gracious.
  5. When I see that my ways are not in line with Scripture, there is no need to change.
  6. As long as I obey eventually, or have good intentions, it’s okay.
  7. When trials come and the enemy attacks, I should turn to my own methods.
  8. It’s okay for worry and fear to dominate my night time hours.
  9. I should be unified with those who follow the ways of the world.
  10. It is hard to see God’s lovingkindness here on the earth, it is so rare.
