Cross References, Questions, Observations

1.       And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain —

1 Cor 3:9

9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.

1 Cor 15:10

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.

Mark 4:26-29

And He was saying, "The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil;  27 and he goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows — how, he himself does not know.  28 "The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head.  29 "But when the crop permits, he immediately puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."

1 Cor 3:6-7

6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.

Gal 1:6-8

6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!

a)     How is it possible to receive the grace of God in vain?

b)     How common is it for someone to receive the grace of God in vain?

1)     Paul committed himself to cultivating, watering, and fertilizing the seeds he had sown to give them every reasonable opportunity to grow and be fruitfull.

2.       for He says,

"AT THE ACCEPTABLE TIME I LISTENED TO YOU,

AND ON THE DAY OF SALVATION I HELPED YOU."

Behold, now is "THE ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold, now is "THE DAY OF SALVATION" —

3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years."

Isa 55:6

6 Seek the LORD while He may be found;

Call upon Him while He is near.

John 4:35

35 "Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.

John 9:4

James 4:13-14

13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." 14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.

Prov 29:1

A man who hardens his neck after much reproof

Will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.

Matt 25:8-13

8 "The foolish said to the prudent, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'  9 "But the prudent answered, 'No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.'  10 "And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut.  11 "Later the other virgins also came, saying, ' Lord, lord, open up for us.'  12 "But he answered, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.'  13 " Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.

Prov 27:1

Do not boast about tomorrow,

For you do not know what a day may bring forth.

Deut 1:21

21'See, the LORD your God has placed the land before you; go up, take possession, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Do not fear or be dismayed.'

Deut 1:41b

we will indeed go up and fight, just as the LORD our God commanded us.' And every man of you girded on his weapons of war, and regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country.

Deut 1:44-45

44 " The Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do, and crushed you from Seir to Hormah. 45 "Then you returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD did not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.

WHY?

Deut 1:26-27

26 " Yet you were not willing to go up, but rebelled against the command of the LORD your God; 27 and you grumbled in your tents and said, 'Because the LORD hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.

Deut 1:32-36

32 "But for all this, you did not trust the LORD your God, 33 who goes before you on your way, to seek out a place for you to encamp, in fire by night and cloud by day, to show you the way in which you should go.

34 "Then the LORD heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and took an oath, saying, 35' Not one of these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers, 36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and to his sons I will give the land on which he has set foot, because he has followed the LORD fully.'

Deut 1:43

43 "So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead you rebelled against the command of the LORD, and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country.

a)     Give some examples of times that are not acceptable.

b)     Why is “now” the day of salvation?

c)      How should we apply this principle to evangelism?

1)     Procrastination is one of Satan’s greatest weapons. On the surface, it seems so innocent, yet it is ever so deadly. Because of its deception, many a soul never turns to the Savior.

2)     No one comes to God on their own timetable, it is always on His. People who plan to come to God on their own timetable and their own terms never come to Him at all.

3)     God’s plans for the ages and for every individual is not subject to man’s approval. God is totally sovereign in the course of history of the world as well as each individual’s life.

3.       giving no cause for offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited,

Lk 17:1,2

He said to His disciples, "It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come!  2 " It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.

Matt 17:27

27 "However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook , and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me."

John 21:15-17

So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My lambs"  16 He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Shepherd My sheep."  17 He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep.

Acts 24:16

16 "In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men.

1 Cor 4:1

Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.

Matt 5:16

16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Rom 14:21

21 It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles.

1 Cor 8:8-9

8 But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. 9 But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.

1 Cor 8:12-13

12 And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.

1 Cor 9:19-23

19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law; 21 to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. 23 I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it.

a)     List some ways in which ministries can be discredited.

1)     God takes the protection and nurturing of young believers very seriously.

2)     Paul did not want his efforts in the ministry to be in vain.

4.       but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God, in much

endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses, 5. in beatings, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in hunger,

Titus 2:5

5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

Titus 2:10

10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.

1 Peter 2:12

12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.

2 Cor 1:12

For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you.

1 Cor 4:1-2

Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy.

2 Cor 11:23-27

23 Are they servants of Christ? — I speak as if insane — I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. 24 Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes.  25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my  countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren; 27 I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.

a)     What would you say to someone who asked you if living the Christian life was difficult?

b)     Why would God have Paul endure so many trials and hardships?

c)      What is the most difficult aspect to you of the Christian life?

d)     Why haven’t you had to endure the kind of trials and hardships that Paul did?

1)     Different people have to face different trials.  God knows what each of us need in our life and exposes us to circumstances that will bring about the greatest growth in our life.
